I never thought I’d have an interest in care. My life was so well planned out. I was doing a job I loved until my wife was involved in an accident. I left work to care for her as she meant the world to me. I had to learn what caring for another person really means. It was very hard to witness someone so independent deteriorate. I have become more than just her husband. I’ve had to detach myself so that she wouldn’t see my pain. I washed her, kept her company as a friend, took on all the house chores, and administered her medications. She has fully recovered now, but my life hasn’t been the same ever since this started. I have now decided to get into care professionally and help others. I’ve learnt that all it would take sometimes is a friendly, helping hand.
